BAPTIST ROOTS AND AFFILIATION

Bethel is part of a denomination called the Baptist Conventon of Ontario and Quebec. (BCOQ). This association has approximately 380 member churches and is about 150 years old. While being Baptist in theology and church practice. it allows a high degree of freedom and flexibility in the ministry styles of its member churches. some churches are very traditional while others are quite contemporary and charismatic in style. The BCOQ is evangelical in theology. The BCOQ has a seminary at McMaster University called the "McMaster Divinity College."
We at Little Bethel emphasize being Christian first and Baptist second. But we are glad to have our wider affiliation with the B.C.O.Q. Its important to be supported by and accountable to the wider Body of Christ. The following are various beliefs and practises that characterize the way Baptists along with many other similare denominations approace church and ministry:

  • Scriptures are our authority for what we believe and do.

(Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21)

  • Church members need to have a personal conversion experience and faith in Jesus Christ.

(John 3:5; Acts 2:38, 41-42; Romans 6:1-11)

  • Priesthood of believers

A believer is once and for all saved by grace through faith in Christ and has free access to God the Father through the one and only High Priest, Jesus Christs for spiritual strength and for the firgiveness of sins. (Ephesians 2:5-10, Hebrews 9:11-28) The distinction between laity and clergy is discouraged. Each member is seen as a minister and is encouraged to discover and use their gifts.

  • Freedom of hte Local Congregation

Each congregation is autonomous (free to act on its own) but also associates voluntarily with other churches for the purpose of support and fellowship and ministry. (No hierarchical structure).

  • Adult believers' baptism by immersion

Baptism is a public testimony of our rebirth through Christ and our commitment to follow Him. People are baptized when they are old enough to understand the nature of such a commitment. Faith comes first, then baptism. Baptsim is by full immersion in water before witnesses. (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38-41, 10:47-48; Colossians 2:12)

  • Congregational church structure

i.e. members take part in deciding on the direction adn ministry of the church.

  • We practice the two church ordinances of Baptism and Communion

  • Separation of Church and State

This belief is founded upon the scriptural teaching of the individual's responsibility to God alone for their eternal destiny. Each Christian has the responsibility and right before God concerning their beliefs without coercion from the state or others.
